    Massachusetts was founded by the Puritans. They founded the colony of Massachusetts to form communites where people could follow the rules of God.

    Virginia was founded by King James 1. Most colonists came to Virginia to search for gold, but when they found that there was no gold there, they started plantations.

    Maryland was founded by Cecilius Calvert. King Charles 1 gave land in North America to Calvert, who hoped to make Maryland a refuge for Catholics like him.

    Rhode Island was founded by Roger Williams. After he was banished from Massachusetts, he wanted to establish a colony where people could worship freely.

    Thomas Hooker created the colony of New Hampshire to form a community where all men could vote, even if they were not church members.

    Connecticut was also founded by Thomas Hooker. He wanted to form a community where all men could vote, even if they were not church members.
  • South Carolina

    South Carolina was also founded by King Charles 2. He wanted to start another colony on that land, he hoped the settlement would keep France and Spain out of the area. Later in 1729, Carolina separated into two colonies: North Carolina and South Carolina.

    New York was founded by James, the Duke of York. His brother, the King of England, gave the colony of New Netherland to him. Later, the name was changed to New York.

    Pennsylvania was founded by William Penn. King Charles 2 owed William Penn's father money, but since his father had died, he repaid William by giving him land.
  • Delaware

    Delaware was also founded by William Penn. The Duke of York gave William Penn even more land, which was once a part of Pennsylvania, but later separated to become Delaware.
  • New Jersey

    New Jeresey was founded by John Berkeley and George Carteret. James, the Duke of York, gave a piece of land to each of them, which were East Jersey and West Jersey. They later joined them together to form New Jersey.
  • Georgia

    Georgia
    Georgia was founded by James Oglethorpe and King George 3. King George 3 started another colony to keep the French and Spanish away from South Carolina. He gave the land to James Oglethorpe, an English lawmaker and army officer.
