The Birth of A Scientist
Thomas Edison was born on February 11th, 1847 in Millan, OH. Edison's parents were Samuel Ogden Edison, Jr, and Nancy Matthews Elliot. His father, Samuel joined the Mackenzie Rebellion which was a revolt inspired by William Makenzie. When the rebellion failed Samuel escaped to the United States, and stayed there for the rest of his life. His mother, Nancy's father was a Revolutionary Was Hero. This event is significant beacuse Thomas Edison would soon become a famous scientist (Asimov 128-136). -

La Dense Des Nymphes was a famous panting, painted by Jean-Baptiste Camille Corot. Camille Corot was a French landscape as well as a portrait painter. He received many awards for his amazing art works. This event is significant becuase this painting was the turing point in Camille Corot's life (Danse Des Nymphes). -
The Battle of Gettysburg
The Battle of Gettysburg was fought from July 1-3. During this battle Abraham Lincoln was the president of the Untied States. This battle was a Union victory. This event is significant beacuse this battle is considered to be the most important engagment of the American Civil War (Battle of Gettysburg). -
The Western Union
Edison worked at the Western Union for one year. When Edison worked at the Western Union, he created a transmitter that helped Alexander Graham Bell compete the telephone. This event is significant because after his part time job Edison was now able to purse his scientific experiments which soon was going to be electric light (WU's Most Influential Employees). -
The marriage of Thomas Edison and Mary Stilwell
Thomas Edison married 16-year-old Mary Stilwell in 1871. Mary was one of his employees that worked with him at his business. Edison and Mary were married for 13 years until she died due to a brain tumor. They has three children together Marion, Thomas, and William. This event is significant because later on William, Edison's son wanted to follow in his father's foot steps and he soon became an inventor just like his father (Frith 78). -
Edison opens his first Industrial research lab
Edison opens his first research lab in 1876 in Menlo Park, New Jersey. This Laboratory was later called "invention factory." This event is significant because Edison along with other scientists worked together to create many new ideas and inventions (Edison's Invention Factory). -
Edison completes the first model for the phonograph
Edison was working on a machine that would transcribe telegraphic messages through indentations on paper tape, which could later be sent over the telegraph repeatedly. The speaking vibrations made indentations in the paper. This event is significant because this is one of Edison's famous inventions (History of the Cylinder Phonograph). -
Umberto I becomes King of Italy
Umberto's full name was Umberto Ranieri Carlos Emanuele Giovanni Maria Fredinanado Eugenio. At just 14 years old he began his military career with the Sardinian forces and took part in the Italian Wars of Independence. This event is significant because he created the Boxer Rebellion. The Boxer Rebellion supported peasant uprising of 1900 that attempted to drive all foreigners from China. "Boxers" was a name that foreigners gave to a Chinese secret society (Boxer Rebellion). -
Edison patents the first phonograph
Soon after Edison was finished with the phonograph he patents it in 1878. The phonograph was a particular method embossing for capturing sound on tin-foil-covered cylinders. This event is significant because it improved the commercialization of the music records (History of the Cylinder Phonograph). -
The first light bulb
In 1879 Thomas Edison, created the first commercially practical incandescent light. He was not the first person trying to make this invention. Research shows that there were over 20 inventors of incandescent lamps prior to Edison’s version. Edison beat everyone to the race. This event is significant because electric light is apart of your everyday lives and without electric light our world would be filled with darkness (History of the the light bulbs). -
The game of BINGO is developed
Bingo is a popular game that can be played for cash and prizes. Bingo was developed from Italy and it was based off the lotto game of tumbula. Many Germans also played a version of the game where they used it as a child's game to help students learn math, spelling, and history. This event is significant because it is a time where you can gather around with friends and family, and just enjoy there company (How bingo was invented). -
Frankin D. Roosevelt becomes President
Franklin Delano Roosevelt was the 32nd president of the United States. Roosevelt was the only U.S. president to be elected four times. He faced criticism for increased government spending, unbalanced budgets and he also perceived as a move toward socialism. This event is significant because he led the United States through the Great Depression and World War II (Franklin D. Roosevelt). -
Edison & Swan united and created an electric light company
Thomas Edison and Joseph Swan wanted to become company partners, so they became partners in 1883. "The Edison and Swan Electric Light Company Limited" was a manufacturer of incandescent lamp bulbs and other electrical goods. This event is significant because it tells us that Edison was very close to Swan and Swan was a person he can trust with his works (Edison and Swan United Electric Light Co). -
The General Electric Company is established
In 1890 Edison established the Edison General Electric Company by bringing his various businesses together. The Thomson-Houston Company became a dominant electrical innovation company through a series of mergers. As both businesses started to grow it had became difficult for either company to produce complete electrical installations.This event is significant because the two companies combined and was now called General Electric Company (Thomas Edison & The History of Electricity). -
Mount Rushmore
Mount Rushmore is a 5,725 feet sculpture.This landmark is located in South Dakota, United States. The sculpture has the heads of four United States presidents they include George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Theodore Roosevelt, and Abraham Lincoln. This event is significant because it shows four major presidents that impacted our country (Mount Rushmore). -
A Dreadful Death
On October 18, 1931 Thomas Edison sadly passed away. At the age of 84 in West Orange, New Jersey. Thomas Edison died due to complications of diabetes. This event is significant because he was the inventor/creator that created light and his legacy still follows us to this day (Asimov 136).
