  • Coahuila y Tejas Constitution

    Written by a unicameral body
    The state religion became Catholicism; citizens were granted equality, liberty, security, and property; slavery was outlawed upon the constitution's ratification; and after six months, slaves could not be imported. It defined citizenship and explained how it may be forfeited.
  • Republic of Texas Constitution

    Declared independence from Mexico
    Influenced by the United states constitution, slavery became legalized. This legalization increased immigration numbers as slave owners migrated to the state in order to keep their slaves legally.
  • Annexation Constitution

    Texas becomes the 28th state of the united states.
    This constitution appointed high offices to the governor and property rights for women.
  • The Civil War Constitution

    Texas secedes from the United States and joins the confederacy. A civil war is fought for slavery and state rights.
    The south looses which starts the beginning of the reconstruction era, the orgin of the democratic party.
  • The Constitution of 1866

  • The 2nd Reconstruction Constitution

    Power is concentrated within the governorship and local governments are weakened, centralized state powers.
    African Americans are granted voting Rights.
  • The Texas Constitution

    The Constitution in use by Texas today highlights popular sovereignty, separation of powers, and checks and balances.Compared to the U.S. Constitution, the Texas Constitution is far lengthier and more comprehensive. It prioritizes rights. It addresses local and state issues that aren't covered by the US Constitution. Unlike the U.S. Constitution, which lists its numerous amendments separately, this one is buried deep inside the text. Since 1876, it has undergone more than 400 amendments.
