    Tess falls asleep at command of the family horse, and it is killed. Tess blames herself in the light of a murder, and the family gave the horse a full burial.
  • Tess meets Alec

    Tess is sent to Trantridge for the first time to claim kinship with the Stokes-Durbervilles. Alec met Tess and took imediate interest in her.
  • Tess Recieves a Letter

    A letter from Mrs. Stokes-D'Urberville is sent to Tess written in masculine handwriting. The letter offers for Tess to come to the mansion to tend to chickens.
  • Tess Departed for Trantridge

    Alec picked up Tess to bring her to his mansion. He drove wildly and made Tess uncomfortable. His driving forced Tess to hold onto him.
  • Tess Goes to the Flower-de-Luce

    Tess goes out with a flock of people where they were drinking. When she was walking home with them when they all got angry at her and Alec came in as the hero to help her escape.

    Alec took a twisting route into the middle of the forest, where none could find them and Tess couldn't escape. She fell asleep and Alec had his way with her.
  • Tess Returns to Blackmore

    Tess and D'Urberville return to her home. Everyone is very excited to see Tess but she cannot bear the weight of her conscience.
  • Tess Christened her Child

    Tess's son Sorrow was ill and doomed to death, but he hadn't been christened. John refused to let a preist come in and christen the boy so Tess did it herself.
  • Sorrow Passed Away

    Sorrow past away in the light of the morning. The priest said that Tess' christening was adaquate and the child would be accepted in death.
  • Tess goes to Talbothay's Dairy Farm

    Being anxious to leave Marlott, Tess took up a cow milking job in an even more rural area.
  • Tess meets Angel Clare

    Tess met Angel Clare and they each took interest in eachother. At one point, Tess heard Angel playing the harp and was enchanted. The two interact a lot in the next few months.
  • The Flood

    On a planned excursion to the church, Tess and her roomates were blocked by a flooded river. Angel came to carry each of them across, acting especially for Tess and ignoring the other girls flirting.
  • Angel Professed His Love for Tess

    After spending time admiring Tess and getting caught, Angel admitted his love for Tess. He noted that she found it uncomforting and decided to stay away.
