  • The Terry family bought the corner. Will Terry grew wheat at the site.

    State Route 532 was built, turning about 12 acres of the farmland into a triangle of land surrounded by road.
  • 1976

    Camano developers Stan Starkenburg and Hap Schnase proposed a 41,000-square-foot shopping center at the site featuring a grocery, pharmacy and eight other available storefronts.
  • 1989

    Schnase sold the land to Consumers Choice Inc. with plans to open a grocery store by 1990.
  • 1994

    With nothing built, the site was sold to Brown and Cole.
  • 1997

    David Platter attempted to build a hotel and shopping area at the site. A Camano Island citizens group, Camano Action for a Rural Environment (CARE), stopped the project.
  • 1999

    Island County approved the shopping area site plan for 19 businesses because it didn’t violate existing laws. CARE argued the county was out of state compliance for not updating its comprehensive plan. Platter’s option to buy the land expired.
  • 2000

    CARE negotiated with Brown and Cole to donate 3.3 acres for Freedom Park if two other parcels were sold.
  • 2001

    The state buys one parcel for a park-and-ride/transit center.
  • 2002

    Plans for a post office at Terry’s Corner were scrapped. Jeff Ericson buys the site for what would become Camano Commons. Brown and Cole donates the land for the park.
  • 2004

    Camano Commons’ gets its first building. The veterans memorial is built at Freedom Park.
  • 2007

    1,000 volunteers build Rotary Playground at Freedom Park.
  • 2008

    Jeff Ericson sells all but two buildings in the Commons.
  • 2014

    Jeff Ericson buys back buildings.
  • 2015

    Camano Island Library opens in the Camano Commons.
