    Gustavo Rojas Pinilla promises the people to introduce into the country the new and most influential means of communication: Television, an idea that the General had conceived since 1936 when he was in Germany. Thus all human and technical efforts to bring the television signal to the entire national territory begin. One year should be the time limit for sending the signal to Colombians.
  • The first test signal

  • Inauguration of television in Colombia

    Service provided directly by the State, in the framework of the celebration of the first year of government of General Gustavo Rojas Pinilla.
    AT seven in the evening, the notes of the National Hymn of the Republic are heard, followed by the words of the President. At the end of the opening ceremony, the first entertainment programs are broadcast. The broadcast lasts three hours and forty-five minutes.
  • Commercial television in Colombia

    During the first year, television spaces had been educational and cultural, and belonged exclusively to the State. In August 1955, the National Government decided to open commercial spaces, for which the Commercial Television Company (TVC) was appointed to manage some spaces.
  • First transmission out of the studio

  • National Institute of Radio and Television

    The National Institute of Radio and Television (Inravision) is created. The agency then depends on the Ministry of Communications, which will have patrimonial, administrative and legal autonomy. The first director of Inravision is César Simmonds Pardo.

  • Colombian satellite television

    The television signal originating in Colombia is made available to the whole world. The exchange of national television programming with foreign programs that are broadcast live is established.
  • First color images

    On the initiative of Inravisión and programming companies Punch, Caracol and RTI, the opening of the football world championship in Germany and the match between Brazil and Yugoslavia is being broadcast. The images, first made in color for Colombia, can only be seen on giant screens installed in the Coliseo El Campín in Bogotá and the Gym of the People in Cali.
  • the National Television Commission was born

    In order to fulfill the constitutional mandate of 1991 to create an autonomous body to monitor television, the National Television Commission (CNTV) was born. By Law 182 of 1995, passed by President Ernesto Samper, the Commission comes into operation. In addition, the respective regulation of programming is established and private channels and local and community non-profit channels are given way.
  • Appearance of private channels

    The two new private channels, Caracol and RCN, are operational. In the same year, proposals for private local channels are presented. Participating, among others, are the Casa Editorial El Tiempo for Bogotá, Icaro Producciones for Yopal and Telefónica de Pereira for this same city. There are 59 spaces available for local channels throughout the country.
  • The End of Inravision

    The audiovisual programer and the National Institute of Radio and Television (Inravision) are liquidated and replaced by Radio Televisión Nacional de Colombia (RTVC), whose functions are: “To benefit more Colombians with education, information and knowledge; To strengthen citizen participation; promote and highlight our plural identity, and open spaces to the new content industry”.
  • Television for all

    By agreement 00001, the National Television Commission guarantees access for ethnic groups to the public television service. “Ethnic television at the local level will be provided in a continuous geographical area corresponding to a collective territory of black communities, indigenous shelter, municipality, association of municipality or district”.
  • Autoridad Nacional de Televisión

    Mediante la ley 1507 de ese año, la criticada Comisión Nacional de Televisión da paso a la Autoridad Nacional de Televisión, que tiene como misión garantizar el pluralismo, la competencia y el servicio de la televisión colombiana. Además, como interlocutor entre el medio y los espectadores, defiende los derechos de estos últimos.
  • DDT 2014 arrives

    Since June of that year, Colombians have had access to Digital Terrestrial Television (DVB-T), which replaces the analogueue version. This means better image and sound quality and savings in the use of the electromagnetic spectrum. By that year, DTT has a coverage of about fifty percent of the country.
