"In the 1870s, two inventors Alexander Graham Bell and Elisha Gray both independently designed devices that could transmit speech electronically" (Bellis, 2016). A legal battle was fought for the patent. Alexander Graham Bell won. Thus on March 10 1876, the telephone era was launched. -

The Candle Stick phone was separated into two pieces. The mouth piece formed the candle stick and the receiver was placed by your ear. "The style died out in the 30s when manufacturers began combining the mouth piece and receiver together" (Zigterman, 2013) -

Push-button keypad introduced
AT&T introduced Touch-Tone, a phone with a keypad. Each key would transmit a frequency that would allow telephone operators to direct the call (Zigterman, 2013) -
Answering Machine
Not popular until the late 60's the answering machine changed phone behaviour. Cassette tapes were originally used to record the message -
Portable house phone
In the 80s a cordless house phone was first created. -
First Mobile Phone
Motorola released first commercial phone - DynaTAC 8000X.
Very expensive. The phone "weighed a staggering 1.1kg" (Goodwin, 2015) and allowed 30 minutes of talk-time and 10 hours to charge. -
