Coal Strike
On May 12th miners left the anthracite fields demanding shorter workdays and increased wages. Roosevelt stood up as an representative for those on strike. The strike ended October 23rd when the miners workday was reduced to 9 hours and their pay increased 10%. -
Elkins Act Passed
Congress passed this act that Roosevelt backed up. It amended the Interstate Commerce Act of 1898. It strengthened the power of the Interstate Commerce Commission allowing them to impose heavy fines on railroads that offered rebates. -
Pelican Island
Teddy Roosevelt named Pelican Island as the first federal bird reservation resulting in the National Wildlife Refuge System. It protected birds from extinction during plume hunting. -
Wins Presidential Election
Theodore Roosevelt defeats Democratic nominee, Alton B. Parker. This win made him the first President to win an election on his own after ascending to President upon the assassination of McKinley -
Devils Tower
Devils Tower was the first national monument. Roosevelt signed the Antiquities Act that allowed land to be proclaimed historic monuments. -
Pure Food And Drug Act
Teddy Roosevelt first passed the Meat Inspection Act of 1906, which led to him signing the Pure Food and Drug act. It was set to protect people from food and drugs that has been contaminated with other substances. -
Yosemite into Federal Land
Signed the American Antiquities Act that transferred the Yosemite Valley back into federal control. The Yosemite National Park was first discovered in 1890. -
Expedition to Africa
Teddy Roosevelt arrives in Mombasa April 21st. Spent many months hunting in the wild of Africa collecting animal specimens. Returns back to the United States June 18, 1910. Writes African Game Trails that includes stories of his adventure. -
Bull Moose Party
After losing the Republican President nominee election to William Howard Taft, Teddy Roosevelt founded the Bull Moose Party. It was known as a third political party and its purpose was to eliminate corruption and any atrocities.
