    Invented by Ray Tomlinson, the invention of email came from the fact that at the time messages could only be sent amongst users on the same mainframe. He was the first to be able to send a message successfully from one computer to another. This was done by using the @ symbol to separate and specify the username of the recipient and the computer that it would be sent to.
