This is a timeline of important events in technology from 1950 until 2012. This project is for my Educational Technology class. -
Printer
History of PrintersRemington-Rand invented the first computer printer in 1953. The printer made it possible for individuals to scan and make copies of documents on their computers. -
Headphones
John C. Koss invented the first stereo headphones in 1958. The headphones would provide a high-quality sound so listeners could more clearly hear music. -
Microchip
Invention of the Microchip On this day in 1958, Jack Kilby and Robert Noyce created the microchip. This was an important invention in technology; the microchip would help manufacturers create better quality devices. -
Cassette Tape
The cassette tape was invented in 1962 by Philips, and this device provided a simple way for listeners to hear and access their music and audio files. -
Compact Disk
Compact Disk InventionIn 1965, James Russell created the compact disk. The CD would give individuals the opportunity to listen to music, and could also store a variety of files and applications for computers. -
Computer Mouse
In 1968, Douglas Engelbart invented the computer mouse. This device made it possible for individuals to navigate to different areas on the computer and click on applications to use them. -
Email
In 1971, Ray Tomlinson created email. Through this new form of communication, people would be able to create and send messages to each other through their computers. -
Cell Phone
On this day in 1973, Martin Cooper created the cell phone. This invention would make it possible for individuals to make and receive phone calls outside of their homes. -
VHS Tape
The VHS video tape was introduced in 1976 by Panasonic and JVC. Through the VHS tape, individuals were provided a simple way to view movies through their televisions and VCRs. -
Personal Computer
Computer Invention On this day in 1977, Steve Jobs and Steve Wozniak created the first personal computer. This computer was the first high-quality computer featuring color graphics and a keyboard. -
Portable CD Player
Sony invented the first portable CD player in 1983. Individuals could play their music CD's outside of their homes since they could now easily take their CD players with them when they left home. -
CD-ROM
In 1985, Sony and Philips created the CD-ROM. Programs such as software and games are featured on the CD-ROM. -
High-Definition Television
HDTVHigh-definition television was invented in Japan in June 1989. This new form of television would provide viewers with a high-quality picture and sound. -
World Wide Web
World Wide WebIn August 1991, Tim Berners-Lee created the World Wide Web, also known as the Internet. People would be able to browse web pages and view video and audio files that were posted on the Internet. The Internet would continue to grow in the world after this date. -
Text Messaging
History of TextingThe first text message was sent on December 3, 1992 by Neil Papworth. Texting provided individuals a new way to communicate through their cell phones. -
DVD
DVD HistoryThe DVD was created in December 1995 by Philips, Sony, Toshiba, and Panasonic. It looks similar to a compact disk and provides a different format to view movies. Movies can be shown in better quality through the DVD. -
USB Flash Drive
Flash drive inventionThe USB Flash Drive was created on this date by M-Systems. This device could be plugged into and removed from a computer, and could store a large number of files. -
iPod
iPod HistoryThe iPod was released on this day, and this new device gave its users the opportunity to store their downloaded music and audio files, and to listen to them at their own convenience. -
iPhone
iPhone CreationIn 2007, the iPhone was born. The phone utilizes a variety of applications and provides people with internet access outside of their home computers. -
iPad
On this day, the iPad was born. This device is very similar to the iPod and iPhone because it has a touch screen. Also, like the iPhone, the Internet can easily be accessed through the iPad.
