I don't remember the exact timeline, but it was circa 1999/2000. Neopets still exists today, and it is my earliest social networking experience. I met people from across the globe on this site and I am still close friends with one of them to this day. That's roughly 16 years of friendship from a silly child's website! I've actually met my friend once and we plan to meet back up a few times this spring for dinner and to catch up.
