    Microsoft creates MS-DOS. This was the disk operating system for all IBM compatible PCs. It is the predecessor to Windows. Prior to disk operating systems, complex commands were required to perform basic computer functions.

    Philips and Sony co-create the Compact disc. Prior to the invention of CDs, information was stored on magnetic tape, which was susceptible to degradation.
  • Motorola DynaTAC

    Motorola DynaTAC
    Motorola creates the first commercially available cell phone. All of the cellular technology in our smartphones can trace its origins to the Motorola DynaTAC. Cell phones have allowed us to stay in near constant contact with others.

    Microsoft creates the software word processor Multi-Tool Word. This is the predecessor to Microsoft Word. Word processors have dramatically improved our productivity, allowing us to quickly create professional documents.

    Apple creates the Macintosh. It is the first commercially successful computer with a GUI and mouse. Having a computer with a GUI is now the standard, whereas it wasn't in 1984.
