Invention of barbed wire
Barbed wire was invented in 1873 by Joseph Glidden. This type of wire was thick and had spike-like barbs on it. This was a cheap and effective way to parcel off land. This wire fencing was mostly used in the Great Plains areas of the United States. It was used by ranchers and cowboys to aid in cattle claims. This invention was significant in history because it changed the way ranching was done. This wire ended ended the reign of cattle drives.

Invention of the Telephone
The telephone was patented in 1876. This invention dramatically effected the way communication was achieved. The connection of telephones created instant communication between lines and took the place of telegrams. Instant communication through the phones provided easier business transactions, healthcare,and family connections. Nearly twenty-five years after the telephone was invented it was popular and widespread throughout the United States.

Invention of the Elevator
The elevator was invented in 1890 by James Otis, The purpose if this invention was to create transportation in the tall skyscraper buildings. Skyscrapers were becoming a part of the city landscape and elevators were making these tall buildings accessible. The start of elevators and sky scrapers began in Chicago IL. This was the turn of city history. Expanding up towards the sky provided space for the booming population of urbanization.

Underground Subway in American Cities
The underground subway was introduced to America in Boston, MA in 1897. The purpose of the subway at this time was to reduce the crowding on the streets by taking some of the transportation underground.It was not long after this that New York and other cities adopted the Subway systems as well. After the invention of the elevator and street cars, the subway was a urban progression that was necessary for growth of the country.

The Wright Brothers invented the first gas motored, manned airplane. The first flight was on Dec.17,1903. This invention advanced America in technological and mechanical advancements.This jump into aeronautics caused more technology through the years and better military machines,automobiles,and industrial production. America continued to lead in industrialization and new inventions paved the way.

Discovery of Penicillin
Biologist Alexander Fleming discovers penicillin.This discovery as one of the world's first antibiotics changed history. Much like the invention of the telephone and subway system this medication improved life for Americans. With the use of this medication many deadly infectious diseases could be cured. Even though this discovery originally happened in London, the benefits in America were grand.
