Negative Impact of the Telescope
With the telescope, there may be some health risks considering that if one looks at the sun through a telescope for too long, it can affect their eyesight and possibly even make a person go blind. In general, looking through a telescope can strain the eyes. Overall, though, the telescope does not have very many negative impacts on society other than the rare possibility that it can hinder eyesight. -
Refracting Telescope
Hans Lippershey is given credit for creating the telescope. Although other telescopes may have been created previously, he is credited for making the first refracting or optical telescope. The invention of the telescope changed society because it allowed for people to finally begin looking at smaller objects at a closer view. Telescopes started the interest in and study of microorganisms. If it weren't for the telescope, society would not have the knowledge that we have today about bacteria. -
Carbonated Water
Joseph Priestley invented carbonated water or soda water in 1767. He discovered this when he combined carbon dioxide and water. He first found this out at a brewery while fermenting beer. The invention of carbonated water has changed society drastically. It allowed for variation in drinks and gave people a nice new refreshment to give their guests. It allowed forthe countless numbers of soda to be created that we now have. -
Negative Impact of Carbonated Water
Carbonated water has had very bad influences on society in recent years. Soda is very unhealthy, and is a leading cause of obesity. Because of poor dieting and soda being a major part of poor diets, the United States is having severe issues with being overweight. The invention of carbonated water has definitely contributed to that. -
Ether as Anesthetic
Dr. William T. G. Morton first discovered that ether could be used as anesthesia for his patients in 1846. This was very helpful to society, because it allows for many surgical operations to be done painlessly nowadays rather than with excrutiating pain. If it weren't for anesthetics, people would be much less likely to have certain surgeries and operations considering the pain that is involved. -
Negative Impact of Anesthetics.
Anesthetics can be very harmful and dangerous for those who choose to use them in surgery. There are several risks that go into the usage of anesthetics which is why some people may refuse anesthesia or at least question it at times. There is the possibility that too much anesthesia may be given and the patient will not wake up which is why anesthetics can be risky. -
Synthetic Plastic
Leo Baekeland experimented with synthetic materials to try to form a new material that could be used instead of shellac which was produced by lac beetles. He wanted to create a synthetic substance that would be easier to process and easier to use. This new synthetic plastic was called Bakelite and it was great for society because it could be heated and molded and it would maintain shape. Once it was created, it was used for countless household products. -
Negative Impact of Synthetic Plastic
At the time, synthetic plastic seemed like a great idea, and it still is very useful in today's society, but many products that are made out of plastic are not able to be recycled. Therefore, the plastic is generally thrown in the trash and taken to the landfill. Once products are used up that are made of plastic, many times they are not able to be rused. Plastic isn't biodegradable, and now is causing problems in filling up all of our laandfills. -
YouTube
In 2005, YouTube was created as a social media site where anyone could share videos for all of the world to see. YouTube was and still is a big hit. It provides for much of the world's entertainment. YouTube is where most of society's pop culture comes from. Kids and adults find much enjoyment with YouTube nowadays. -
Negative Impact of YouTube
Because YouTube is a public sharing device for videos, anyone can view or comment on a particular video. Online bullying has become somewhat of a problem recently due to all the social networking sites available, and YouTube is one of them. YouTube is great for sharing your videos, but it also makes it very easy for somehow to comment with hurtful or derogatory words and not have to deal with a face-to-face confrontation.
