    In 1980 IBM hires Microsoft to develop business language for their personal computer in development.
  • IBM Manufactures FIRST Personal Computer

    In August of 1981 IBM releases the IBM 5150 a first in Personal Computers at an initial MSRP $1565. According to inflation calculator on data.bls.gov website, the cost is the equivalent to $5205.80 in 2023.
  • CD & CD ROM Co-Developed by Phillips and Sony

    The Compact Disk (CD) and Compact Disk Read-Only Memory (CD ROM) was co-developed by Phillips and Sony and first manufactured in August of 1982. By 1985 sales rapidly increased outselling cassette tapes to become the most popular audio format until 2002, around the time the first iPod was released by Apple.

However in 1983 Motorola released the DanaTAC 8000X, which became the first commercially available handheld cellular mobile phone available to the masses at a cost of $3995. During a time when minimum wage was $3.35, taking inflation into consideration, the cost today would be $12,541.60. So, I guess little has changed. Cell phones are expensive.
