IBM 9345 - "Sawmill"
Year: 1990
Inventor: IBM First hard disk drive to use magneto-resistive heads. This allowed for bits to be stored more densely, thus increasing capacity of drives. Greater capacity meant more storage for files. That's had a huge impact in computing. -
SSD Module
Year: 1992
Inventor: SanDisk (SunDisk, at the time) The solid state drive module was made for evaluation by IBM. Solid state drives, in general, were made to be what's considered non-volatile storage, and, in application, have made data storage a lot safer. Since there are no moving parts, data can be stored with little issue and a lot more reliability. -
Java
Year: 1995
Inventor: Sun Microsystems Java 1.0, introduced in 1995, has become one of the largest platforms for cross-system compatibility. Applications can be coded once, then work across several systems. -
DVD
Year: 1995
Inventor: Sony, Philips, Toshiba, Time-Warner, etc., etc. At the time, a high-density storage unit of 4.7GB, announced in 1995 and launched in '96, the DVD changed the way we store data (to a moderate degree), and would later be used to change the game for movies, video games, and more. To this day, many industries use them as a backup method. -
Wi-Fi
Year: 1999
Inventor: Vic Hayes (1991, as WaveLAN) Wi-Fi, as it's known these days, was officially branded as such in 1999, sold to consumers, and launched into a global phenomenon. It, to this day, is a huge part of everyday life for the majority of the world, as it is a wireless communication and access to the internet.
