  • Compromise of 1877

    Compromise of 1877
    The Compromise of 1877 was an unofficial agreement between the Southern Democrats and allies of the Republican Rutherford Hayes to settle the disputes from the result of the 1876 election. This also is what ended the Reconstruction Era for the U.S.
  • Spanish-American War

    Spanish-American War
    The Spanish-American War was the shortest war fought, being only 3 months long. It was fought between the U.S and Spain because of multiple causes such as the De Lome Letter and the sinking of the USS Maine. Spain would not comply with the U.S so they had to declare war. U.S acquired territories in the western Pacific and Latin America, which became the end of Spanish colonial rule in the Americas.
  • Annexation of Hawaii

    Annexation of Hawaii
    Sanford B. Dole decided to travel over to Hawaii and there he chose to overthrow it and take over power. The reasoning for wanting Hawaii for the U.S was because of military complexes and valuable resources like sugar. The United States, despite the people of Hawaii's opinions, was able to overthrow and annex Hawaii into the U.S.
  • World War 1

    World War 1
    World War 1 began because of the assassination of the Archduke Franz Ferdinand. Countries were split into the Allied Forces (Serbia, Russia, France, Great Britain) and Central Powers (Austria-Hungary, Germany, Ottoman Empire) while the U.S remained neutral for 3 years until Germany started to violate peace treaties and asked Mexico to attack the U.S. Fighting lasted for about 4 years, when the war ended in November 11th 1918.
  • Roaring 20's

    Roaring 20's
    After WW1 ended, soldiers returned home and came back to a new era. "Return to Normalcy" policy, new innovations like assembly line, standard of living was improved by technology, prohibition, consumerism and consumption, arts, and the Harlem Renaissance.
  • Stock Market Crash

    Stock Market Crash
    When the stock market crash happened, it was the sharpest drop that had ever occurred and the stock market ultimately collapsed (aka Black Tuesday). Banks heavily invested in the stock so they suffered major losses when it crashed and could not pay people their money back. This ultimately marked the beginning of the Great Depression.

    The Dust Bowl
    The Dust Bowl was an ecological disaster caused by years of poor farming practices and overproduction which weakened soil.
  • World War 2

    World War 2
    World War 2 began because Germany invaded Poland. It lasted about 6 years, and the U.S joined when Japan attacked Pearl Harbor. Throughout WW2, the Holocaust occurred, Japanese Internment Camps, D-Day, and Germany surrendered in April 1945.
  • Pearl Harbor

    Pearl Harbor
    On December 7th, 1941, Pearl Harbor (naval U.S base in Hawaii) was attacked by Japanese aircraft. The U.S was neutral at this time in the war, and this is what ultimately sent them into war.
  • D-Day

    D-Day
    D-Day, also known as the Normandy landings, was the Allied invasion of German-occupied France, which marked the beginning of the liberation of Western Europe from Nazi control.
  • Cold War

    Cold War
    After WW2, the United States and the Soviet Union were the two world superpowers and started to compete for global influence. It was a period of rivalry that consisted of nuclear arms race, proxy wars, and ideological conflicts.
  • Korean War

    Korean War
    In 1948, Korea was divided into two parts- North (communist) and South.(democratic). In 1950, North Korea invaded South Korea to try and invade and reunite them together as one communist nation. The U.S helped out by leading a military intervention into South Korea and to also contain communism.
  • Space Race

    Space Race
    During the Cold War, there was a major competition between the U.S and the Soviet Union in trying to achieve space exploration. While the Soviets were the first to launch a space satellite, the U.S was able to get the first human on the moon.
  • Civil Rights Act of 1964

    Civil Rights Act of 1964
    The Civil Rights Act of 1964, which was signed by President Lyndon B. Johnson, did not allow discrimination based on race, color, religion, sex, or national origin, and aimed to end segregation in public places and workplaces.
  • Oil Crisis

    Oil Crisis
    The 1973 oil crisis, aka the Arab oil embargo, was triggered by the Yom Kippur War, when Arab members of OPEC imposed an oil embargo on the United States and other countries that supported Israel, leading to a sharp increase in oil prices and a global energy crisis.

    The Persian Gulf War, also known as the First Gulf War, was a conflict started by Iraq's invasion of Kuwait in August 1990, which led to a U.S international coalition's intervention to liberate Kuwait and restore its sovereignty.
  • Kosovo Crisis

    Kosovo Crisis
    The Kosovo crisis involved a brutal campaign of ethnic cleansing by Serbian forces against Kosovar Albanians, which led to mass displacement and NATO having to intervene to stop the ethnic cleansing.
  • September 11th (9/11)

    September 11th (9/11)
    On September 11th 2001, terrorists from al-Qaeda hijacked four commercial airplanes and crashed them into the World Trade Center and the Pentagon. These attacks killed 3,000 people and were the deadliest terrorist attacks in U.S history.
  • Election of 2016

    Election of 2016
    The Presidential Election of 2016 was between Republican rep. Donald Trump and Democrat rep. Hilary Clinton. Donald Trump won the electoral vote with 304-227. (Even though Hilary Clinton did win the popular vote).
  • Election of 2020

    Election of 2020
    The Presidential Election of 2020 was between Republican rep. (former president of 2016-2020) Donald Trump and Democratic rep. Joe Biden. Biden was able to win the electoral vote with 306-232. He also won the popular vote.
