Task 3 - What kind of media institution might distribute your media product and why?

  • 1.

    1.
In the film industry, distribution is the final and important step to getting the film to the audience. Distribution covers marketing, advertising and selling the film
  • 2.

    2.
Typically films are distributed first theatrically - this means they are distributed through cinema. Successfull theatrically distributed films are then sold in a number of different ways:

    3.
    *DVD/Blueray
    *On demand TV
    *Network TV
    *Internet Downloads
    *Merchandising and licensing deals

    Examples of distributors:
    American distributor - Warner Bros.
    Uk distributor - Revolver Entertainment

    5.
Revolver Entertainment would be interested in distributing our film 'Meat Eater' as they have distributed thrillers in the past. Recently they distributed a success thriller documentary film called 'The Imposter'. I feel that our film would positively add to their representation of thrillers as Revolver Entertainment haven't distributed many thrillers in the past

    6.
Our film 'Meat Eater' follows the story of a drug that goes terribly wrong and leads to a post-apocalyptic world filled with infected people and cannibals. I feel our thriller would be distributed by Revolver Entertainment as its full of suspense, tension and paranoia as this scenario could one day happen.

    7.
This is a british film so Revolver Entertainment (british distributer) would be interested. Our plot is the sort of plot you would find in big hollywood thriller films such as 'I AM LEGEND' so on that note our british film would represent the distributors well

    8.
Even though our film is british I don't feel it will only appeal to a UK audience as the plot in our story could happen in any country. The plot follows an epidemic and shows how people battle and contain it. I feel this could have a wider appeal as it makes the audience wonder ''what if this problem becomes a pandemic?'' Everyone would become involved, this could lead to a different range of audience appeal

    9.
The main way we would get our film marketed and exhitbed is through advertisiment. We would do this by releasing full length trailers online and posters. This would create word of moth concering our film. Good publicity will lead to our film being exhibited in a good way. This could result in a blanket release for our film since it would be expected to attract a mass audience

Self distribution or independent distribution is when the film company releases the film without a distributor. Typically low budget art house films are known to be distributed in this way. Some film companies argue that this is a good way of distribution as:
*The film will release when the filmmaker wants
*100% of box office income goes to film company
*No need to hire expensive publicist as film is being independently distributed.

    11.
However there are disadvantages of independent distribution:
*Independent films are given very limited release, normally only 7 days
*Very time consuming as filmmaker will be chasing buyers and filling paperwork
