    Womens undergarments consisted of a knee-length linen chemise with straight, elbow length sleeves. Corsets compressed the waist and skirts were held in shape by layers of strached petticoats, stiffened with tucks and cording. the full sleeves were held by down-filled sleeve plumpers.

Shoulders were also sloped and puffed sleeve heads gradually shrank and then dissapeard. Waistcoats or vests were single or double breasted, with rooled shawl or notched collars, and extremely tight through waist.

They were made of silk and satin. Because the sewing machine. The scarfs were always worn around the neck and tucked into the vest.

They wore see through shawls and opera length gloves. Skirts were changed in shapes , mostly bell shape with lots of pleats. They would attach the skirt to the corset using organ and cartrdige pleats which would creat the skirt to flair.

The hair could be worn in a bun or a knot on the top flowing down to the bacl of the head. Women in the 1840's wore the hair parted down the middle with curls in the front and a bun at the back. Feathers Pearls Ribbons and Lace were worn in the hair at night for more formal look.

Nude colour undergarments were made to give the illlusion of skin under the dress. Womens. The girls wore very different types of pants under their skirts to reach their ankles. Between 2 and 16 the girls also wore corsets under their gowns. Underwear in that period was worn high waisted. Bras were made of lace and satin and floral pattern.

    outerwear for women The shawl was very popular at this time. It was worn sqaure and worn folded on a diaganal. Riding uniforms called habbits had high necked and high waisted jackets with long tight sleeves worn over a tall collard shirt. Tall hats were worn also. New narrow sleeves coats and jackets came back to fashion and were knee length. Wide collars extended over the shoulders and covered the chest. They had layers of fabric hanging in the front and were also belted at the waistline.

In the morning the men had a morning coat that would be worn with light colour pants for any daytime occassion. The vest replaced the waist coat at this time and had no collar and were in floral and stripe print. A pardessus for the men was a large cape with a yoke for the shoulder.

Undergarments became prettier. Elastics were introduced for the pants in suspenders to support the stockings. Garters were also introduced for women. Camisoles for women undergarments were introduced.

Another fashionable outer item was an Indian shawl or one woven in paisley, refrewchire in a paisly pattern in imitation of Indian styles. Also Hooded cloaks were worn. Riding habits had fitted jackets with tight sleeves, worn over acollared shirt or chemisette. Mannish top hats snd long skirts were worn with that.

The Frock coat was one of the best coats to wear, they were very popular. The popular coats in the 1850s were fitted, long-sleeved coats with a centre vent at the back. Not all coats, but some do have reverse collar and lapels. These coats ussaly had 6 bottons ( 3 going down in the centre then right beside another 3) and buttoned on the side.

    in the 1850s, some men wore oversized jackets with rather large buttons on it with a cloack overtop. They also wore a top hat, agian mostly the coluors black and brown. When it was cold outdoors, they would wear thick flimsy pants underneath for wormth. Some men also wore scarfs around the neck but tucked into their waistcoat.

    As skirts became narrower and flatter in front, more emphasis was placed on the waist and hips. A corset was therefore used to help mold the body to the desired shape. This was achieved by making the corsets longer then before, and by constructing then from separate shaped pieces of fabric.

Day dresses featured wide pagoda sleeves worn over undersleeves or engageantes. Heavy silks in solid colors became fashionable for both day and evening wear. Sleeves narrowed at the end of the 1860s. The back of the gowns got bigger.

    in the 1860s, men wore their coats short in the front, long in the back. Very fitted and tight all down the arms and fitted at the neck. The vest goes underneath the coat going down by big buttons. Very large pockets are also present in the coats.
