In general, Butler was hated by both sides of the war. He was a Union general, and fought for rights of African-Americans. Even though his stance in the war was moral, he was a cruel and unjust person. Outside of the army, he was a Radical republican, a Lowell attorney, and served two terms in the Massachusetts state legislature. -

He graduated from Colby College in Maine in 1838. After his education, he established a large criminal practice. -
Battle of Big Bethel
The battle of Big Bethel happened in Tabb and Hampton, Virginia. Benjamin Butler was the Union general, and John B. Masgruder was the Confederate leader. Butler assumed command of Dep. of Virginia at Fort Monroe, since it was a strategic toehold in Confederate territory. he helped three slaves escape, and disobeyed the Fugitive Slave Law of 1850. He built a fort, which was alarming to the Confederates and a battle began. The Confederate Army won and had 8 casualties. The Union had 60. -
