Kristallnacht
Kristallnacht means, “crystal night," or the night of broken glass. During this, Nazi storm troopers attacked Jewish homes, businesses, and synogogues. Shop windows were broken, 35,000 Jews were arrested and sent to camps, and the Nazis blamed the Jews for the destruction. After, curfews were placed on Jews. In 1938, there were only about 215,000 Jews remaining in Germany. -
Eva Galler's Dad Writes Letter
At the time, all the Jews in Europe did not know that they were going to be mass exterminated. The persecution was a step-by-step process. Her father wrote a letter saying, "By now you have heard that Vienna has been occupied by the Germans. Unfortuantely, we are dancing at the same wedding. I am very nervous." -

This event was the start of WWII. “Final Solution” were started by Hitler to quickly exterminate Jews and non-Aryan races to death camps. -

In 1941, France sent 17,000 Jews to camps, beginning massive deportation. At this point, there were only about 130,000 Jews left in Germany. -
Galler's Problems Begin
It was around 6:00 on a Sunday morning when Eva's family was awoken to gun shots. They went outside to see German soldiers on motorcycles shooting at people and not caring who they killed. -

Japanese Americans are Placed in Work Camps
Around 110,000 Japanese Americans were placed in work camps until the war was over. In Eurpoe, all Polish Jews were sent to Bergen-Belsen concentration camps and all ghettos were liquidated to Auschwitz. Many Jews were committing crimes and were arrested. Their crimes included using public transportation, owning pets, visiting barber shops, having a typewriter or electric appliance, and wearing or owning woolen or fur clothing. -

Eva's family hears the drummer come. He tells them that they have to move. They are told to carry what they can and walk seven kilometers to a place called a ghetto. -

Out of the 60,000 people, 56,065 people were killed. At this time, there were only around 15,000 Jews left in Germany. -
Eva Goes to Belzec
Eva and her family are taken from the ghetto to the death camp of Belzec. It was not a working camp, so there were no survivors. They just gassed them and cremated them. -

There Germans were going to force unmarried women to bear SS troops' children. In this year, 46,000 Jews were gassed and burned in just one day at Auschwitz. -

When Auschwitz was freed, there were only 5,000 people remaining. Buchenwald was freed, which is where Anne Frank's dad was. In April, FDR died, Mussolini was assassinated and Hitler committed suicide. Finally, Japan and Germany surendered, ending WWII. -

Russians came in, but Eva was still scared to tell people that she was Jewish. -
