John Jay was a politian, statesman, founding father, and the Chief Justice of the U.S.
What John Jay is know for the most is his work on the federalist papers. These papers were important because they convinced people to ratifiy the consitution, which is a very important thing in our country. -
John Marshall
John Marshall was the Chief of Justice and helped make the Supreme Court coequal with the legislative and executive. He was the longest Chief of Justice. This was important because it made our government more balanced. -

The Supreme Court spent its first session organizing itself and determining its own powers and duties. The new Justices heard and decided their first actual case in 1792.

Madion vs. Marbury
Marbury petitioned the Supreme Court because his commision had not been delivered. Marbury wanted Madison to deliever them to him. First time Supreme Court had been petitioned. -
Fletche vs. Peck
There was a claim by Robert Fletcher that the 1796 act passed by the Georgia legislature could not take away property rights gained by land companies under the Yazoo Land Act of 1795. -
• Gibbons v. Ogden
Decision in which the Supreme Court held the power to regulate interstate commerce was granted to Congress. -
• Cherokee Nation v. Georgia
The Cherokee Nation sought a federal injunction against laws passed by the state of Georgia depriving them of rights within its boundries. the Supreme Court did not hear the case. -
• Worcester v. Georgia
The Supreme Court vacated the conviction of Samuel Worcester and held the Georgia criminal statue that prohibited non- Indians from being present on Indian lands without a license from the state. -
• Commonwealth v. Hunt
Decision made by the Massachuetts Supreme Judicial Court on the subject of labor unions. It ruled that unions were legal organizations and had the right to strike. -
• Dred Scott v. Sanford
Dred Scott was a slave in a state that was a free state. He tried to get his freedom back but it was 7 to 2. -
Darmouth College v. Woodward
Changed Darmouth College from a private school to a public school. They argued that the government could not alter a contract by the private school.
