Dred Scott vs. Sanford
Dred Scott was originally a Missouri slave, but was sold to a man from Illinoise named John Emmerson. Illinoise at that time was a free state and Scott was confused as to why he wasn't a free man. When his owner died he sued the mans wife and they were tried in court. The jury later stated that the widow won due to the fact that an african american, free or not, was never a citizen. Also since Scott was basically property, he had no right to bring his owner to court.
