Engel v Vitale
A New York state Board of regents issued a short prayer at the start of each school day. A group of people gathered to challenge the prayer, believing that it went against the Establishment Clause of the first amendment. The Court ruled that the State could not hold a prayer in public school even if participation was not required. This established the separation of "church and state" -
Wisconsin v Yoder
A Wisconsin Law required students to attend school until the age of 16.Three Amish parents refused to send their children to school past the 8th grade because they believed it went against their religious beliefs. In an unanimous decision, the Court stated that individual interests in the free exercise of religion under the First Amendment outweighed the State Law concerning school attendance.
