Engel took Vitale to the supreme court over The New York State Board of Regents authorizing a voluntary prayer before each school day. Tinker v Des moines
Tinker was protesting the Vietnam war with black armbands and the Des Moines expelled her for wearing them, Tinker took Des Moines to court for violating the 1st amendment to freedom of speech. the decision of the court was a 7-2 decision for tinker. it is important because we are allowed to have free speech in schools. -
Lemon v. Kurtzman
Alton J. Lemon was suing David H. Kurtzman (the superintendent of Public Instruction of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania) for statutes that provided for the state to pay for non-secular and non-public education. Lemon believed that the statute violated the separation of church and state described in the First Amendment. -
