Marbury v. Madison
This case formed the basis of Judicial Review. This helped form the checks and balances we have. -
Fletcher v. Peck
They fought over land fraud. In the end, Marshall ruled that the state was trying to pass legislation invalidating a contract. That is illegal. This was the first time something was ruled unconstitutional. -
Dartmouth College v. Woodward
New Hampshire wanted to change Dartmouth to a public school. The case ended up going to the supreme court. First time the court said that contracts involved individual property rights. -
McCollough v. Maryland
Maryland wanted to slow down the Second Bank of the United States. The signifigance is that it showed that Congress had implied power from the Constitution. -
Gibbons v. Ogden
It was a case between two steamboat drivers. First time Supreme Court interpreted the Commerce Clause of the Constitution. -
Cherokee Nation v. Georgia
Georgia wanted to take the Cherokee's land. They went to court and the Supreme Court because they allowed Georgia that land.
The Supreme Court did not hear the case on its merits. It ruled that it had no original jurisdiction in the matter, as the Cherokee were a dependent nation. -
Worcester v. Georgia
Worcester opposed the Indian Removal and got arrested by georgia. Georgia made a law saying that any white person living on Native American land has to obtain a license to be there. This influenced the makings of the tribal sovereignty doctrine. -
Commonwealth v. Hunt
The Boston Journeymen Bootmakers' Society said that if anyone broke their rules they would be fired. One of the people who got fired was a lawyer and decided to sue them. This is important because it started the Amerrican Labor Union. -
Dred Scott v. Sanford
Scott wantede to buy his family and his freedom, but was turned down. He went to congress and got denied. This helped the panic of 185
