Siege of Vicksburg begins
Vicksburg was a key city that the Union needed to control, as controling Vicksburg meant controlling the entire Mississippi river, a crucial waterway. Unfortunately, the city was located on a bluff overlooking a hairpin turn in the Mississippi, preventing any assault by way of the river. However, in May 1863, Union general Ulysses S. Grant marched a small army of men up to the city beginning a siege that would last over six weeks until the Confederate troops in the city surrendered. -
Battle of Gettysburg
The Battle of Gettysburg was fought near the city of Gettysburg, Pennsylvania and had the greatest number of casualties of any single battle throughout the course of the Civil War. Pickett's Charge caused 4,155 of these casualties, 1,500 Union and 2,655 Confederate. -
Siege of Vicksburg ends
After enduring a famine by eating whatever they could get their hands on, including dogs, horses, and mules, Confederate troops finally surrendered. The surrender granted Union forces control of the city of Vicksburg and the rest of the Mississippi, splitting Confederate forces on either side of the Mississippi.
