This increased tension because he was an abolitionist and went to raid a southern land at Harper's Ferry. -

This increased tension over slavery and led to many southern states to secede from the union. -
Southern states begin to secede
This led to increased tension because the southern states did not like the rulings and left the union fearing slavery would be eliminated. -
Battle at Fort Sumter
This event caused more tension because it was caused by more sectionalism and and people from the south opposing Lincoln's decision to put more weapons at fort sumter.
