President Wilson asks congress for a declaration of war. This was with imperial Germany. The German government anounced a re-opened Germany policy of unrestricted submarine warfare. -
Selective Service Act
Congress passes the Selective service Act authoriizing the draft. It was critized for destroying democracy at home. While fighting for it abroad, President Wilson claims he sees no other option and signs the bill into law. -

Robert L Wiley was handed a large envelope containing letters his father wrote. The letters were between the summer of 1917 and February of 1919. They were covering the years he served in World War I. -

After a visit to Europe, Robert L. Wiley Jr. reconstructed his fathers experiences. He drew on his own readings of history and illistrated the memoir. He did it with then-and-now photographs of war sites. -
