at the age of 4, as he recounts in Danse Macabre, he arrived back into the house one day having been playing with a young neighbour boy, and he was white as a sheet and unable to answer questions. King therefore wanted to write under another name, in order to increase his publication without over-saturating the market for the King "brand."
