Stephen Jay Gould's Life
An american born paleontologist and evolutionary biologist. His post dwarinian efforts have increased evolutionary biology's knowledge threshold through the roof and has had several recognizable achievements within the field. His fighting against creationism, his book Ontogeny and Phylogeny, and his work on the punctuated equilibrium. Gould has proven himself time and time again as a major contributor to both science and philosophy. -
Punctuated Equilibrium
In 1972 with the help from Niles Eldredge Gould created the Punctuated Equilibrium. This states that evolution is relatively stable with an infrequently punctuated by branching off specification. -
Ontogeny and Phylogeny
Gould wrote a book on evolution which explores embryonic development known as ontogeny and biological evolution known as phylogeny. The book dived deep into Heterochrony, the study of changes in developmental timing, which was a new concept to biology at the time. -
Campaigned Against Creationism
Gould campaigned against creationism proposing that science and religion are non-overlapping magisteria, believe the two to be distinct in both their end goals, and how they go about achieving them. He provided expert testimony in McLean v Arkansas. This law suit discussed the mandate of teaching creation science in Arkansas public schools, that eventually ruled that creationism is religion, not science. -
