Stephen Toulmin Early Life
Stephen Toulmin earned a Bachelors degree in Math and Physics. He served as an Officer during World War II. In 1948 he earned his PhD in Ethics. He worked under Ludwig Wittgenstein who influenced Toulmin's work with human reason used in relation to moral and ethical issues. He later became a university lecturer in Philosophy of Science. Throughout his career he published many books. -
Toulmin Model of Argument
Stephen Toulmin created a Model of Argument. The Model of argument has six parts.
1- Claim
2- Data
3- Warrant
4- Backing
5- Modality
6- Rebuttal In his 1958 book titled, "The Uses of Argument" he states that this process is used for developing, analyzing, and categorizing arguments. -

Contribution to Philosophy
Stephen Toulmin contribution to Philosophy is based around his reasonable thinking about morals and ethical based issues, such as language and judgments.
He was concerned with describing prescriptive language, value judgements that is used for ethical statements.
All of his books that he published were based around Moral and Ethical reasoning. -
