On August 23, 1939, representatives from Germany and the Soviet Union met and signed the Nazi-Soviet Non-Aggression Pact, which guaranteed that the two countries would not attack each other. By signing this pact, Germany had protected itself from having to fight a two-front war in the soon-to-begin World War II. -
Invasion of Poland
Germany and the Soviet Union attacked Poland on September 1st, 1939. France and the United Kingdom, Poland's allies, came to their support and declared war on the 3rd of September. However, their efforts were not rewarded because Germany and the Soviet Union gained control over Poland on October 6th, 1939. -
Free City of Danzig
This port was made on account of the Treaty of Versailles and was protected by the League of Nations. Eventually it was overtaken by Nazi Germany. -

Blitzkrieg is descirbed as "lightning war", or a sudden military offensive, usually combining air and mobile land forces. Germany was known for using blitzkrieg war tactics in the beginning of the war to ensure a quick and easy win. -

The Phoney War was a phase early in World War II that was known for the Western Allies' lack of major military operations against the Germany. -

Evacuation of Dunkirk
The Dunkirk Evacuation was the evacuation of the British Expeditionary Force and other Allied troops from the French seaport of Dunkirk to England. Many different modes of transportation were used in the evacuation. When it ended, 198,000 British and 140,000 French and Belgian troops had been saved. -
