Battle of Antietam
A battle between General Robert E. Lee and Union General McClellan was labeled the bloodiest day in American history. McClellan had failed to follow up his victory by chasing Gen.Lee and his weakened forces. Fired Shortly after by Lincoln.
Turning point in the Civil War that would lead to Lincoln announcing the Emancipation Proclamation. -
Emancipation Proclamation
Proclamation issued by Lincoln freeing all slaves in areas still at war with the Union. Did not free slaves in the Union.
Changed the reason behind the Civil War to one about abolition. A move towards development in the eventual Civil Rights movement. -
Lincoln Fires McClellan
Lincoln fired McClellan after he failed to follow up on Robert E. Lee's Army while they were weakened. Lincoln felt frustrated with McClellan had been playing offensive beforehand, leading up to his discharge.
McClellan being fried was a turning point in the Civil War as the Union gained a better leader, with better results in battle. -
Emancipation Proclamation goes into effect
The Emancipation Proclamation goes into effect freeing slaves in the Southern territories. Also provided the Union with more soldiers as freed slaves were able to aid in the war effort.
Leads to the Freedmen Bureau, which would help the freed African Americans. -

Battle of Vicksburg
A battle that ended with the Confederacy being divided, gave the Union control of the Mississippi. Enabled a Union advantage over the South.
The battle gave a lot of power to the Union as they could now control the capital of the CSA, speeding up the war. -
Grant takes over Union Army
Ulysses S Grant takes over as general of the Union Army. Takes over as the general due to his past experience in battle.
Grant taking control of the Union Army allowed for a change in war strategies. -
13th Amendment
Freed African American slaves. Outlawed the practice of involuntary servitude and peonage.
Freed the slaves which lead to the union gaining more help in the war effort and more Republican votes. -
Freedmen's Bureau
Established in 1865 by Congress to help the millions of former Black slaves and poor whites in the South. Provided food, housing, and medical aid.
Gave food and schooling to the attempted former slaves. -
End of Civil War
General Rober E. Lee surrendered to General Ulysses S Grant at the Appomattox Court house. Making the Union the winner of the Civil war.
The CSA giving in would force them to amend the changes in regards to civil rights for African Americans. -
Civil Rights act of 1875
Outlawed segregation. Guaranteed African Americans equal treatment in public transportation and public accommodations and service on juries.
Was outlawed by the Supreme Court in 1883, paving the way for Jim Crow laws but still provided some assistance to African Americans.
