To protest the tea act colonists dressed as indians hurl tea into the Boston harbor -
Coercive or "Intolerable" Acts
A set of acts made by the British to control colonists. These included closing the Boston harbor and electing a new governer. -
First Continental Congress
A group of represenatives from 12 colonies gather to discuss what to do about Britian. -
Lexington and Concord
British were odered to capture and destroy military supplies that were stored in Mass. minute men heard and ran to defend. -
Midnight ride
A ride by William Dawes and Paul Revere warning minutemen that the British were coming.

Second Continental Congress
Deligates from 13 colinies (this time) met to discuss war with England. Promted by a speech from John Adams they agreed to go to war. -
Ticonderoga
Ticonderoga was taken by the French during the Fench Indian war. The British fought and won to take it back from the Americans and French. -
Battle of Bunker hill
Also called "Battle of Breed's Hill". Americans learned that Britian wanted to surround and capture Boston, so they set up forts on Breeds hill which the British captured making the Americans reteart to Bunker hill. -

Washington voted commander-in-chief of the Continental army by the Congress. -

Common Sense is published
Common Sense was a pamphlet written by Thomos Paine stating reasons Britisn should rule America. It became wildly popular and got people to join the army. -
Declaration of Independence is ratified
Writen by Thomas Jefferson declareign America’s independence and secession from England as well as officially proclaiming a state of war. -
Battle of Long Island/Battle of Brooklyn
Folowing the Declaration of Independence first battle when America engaged as a country. It was very large. -
Arrival of 30,000 British Troops in New York Harbor
30,000 British troops come and capture New York -
Battle of White Plains
Americans defeat British at White Plains New York.

Benjamin Franklin goes to France to ask for their help
Franklin goes to France to try and convince them to fight for the colonists agianst Britian. -
Washington captures Hessians at Trenton, New Jersey
Washington and his troops had just crossed the Delaware River and weren't prepaired to fight Hessians at Trenton but they managed to capture about half. This boosted moral and made people join the army. -
Philadelphia is lost to British
British planned to keep Washington and his troops busy defending Philly while they worked on capturing the north. -
Washington defeated at Brandywine
Because of poor scouting the British took the Americans by surprise. Americans were deafeted and forced back toward Philadelphia. -
American's win at Saratoga
5,000 British and Hessian troops surrend to Americans. It became the first large-scale surrender of British forces. -
Articles of Confederation adopted
A first and and failed constitution making te states a confederation of sovereign states. -
Washington's Winter at Valley Forge
Washington's army was cold, hungry, and sick. But they proved themselves tough by not giving up. Still many men left. -
France signs treaty of alliance with United States
French, who also hated the British, sign an allience with the Americans to help defend from British attacks -
John Paul Jones captures Serapis
Jones and some American ships were able to drive Serpapis's crew off the ship and capture it. He said the famous line "I have not yet begun to fight!" when the opposing captian asked him to leave his ship. -
Charleston, South Carolina falls to British
British deafted Americans and took Charlestown. -
Elizabeth Freeman sues Massachusetts for her freedom
A strong minded slave goes to court saying that The Decration of Independence states that "all men are created equal" and that should include slaves -
Battle of Yorktown
Americans with the help of the French were able to take back Yorktown. -
Treaty of Paris
Peace treaty signed between Great Britain and United States making America free from Britian and ending the war. -
