Fire in Notre Dame's main building
The main Building and the library collection were destroyed by a fire in April 1879, but dont worry, it was rebuilt before the nest school year. -

Science enters Notre Dame
In 1880, a science program was established at Notre Dame. -
St. Ignatius High school Founded
St. Ignatius High school was founded by a german Jesuit. Ignatius was originally a six-year school based on the German Gymnasium, that was to be attended after the completion of six years of grammar school. -
Notre Dame residence halls built
By 1890, individual residence halls were built to house the increasing number of students. Now has more than 11,000 students. -
Main building complete
The original structure, the Main Building, was completed in 1891 and is now a Cleveland Historic Landmark. -
Grotto built at Notre Dame
The Grotto of Our Lady of Lourdes, built in 1896, is a replica of the original in Lourdes, France. -
Ignatius split into a high school and college
In 1902, separate four-year high school and college programs were formed. -
Notre Dame a university
By 1921, with the addition of the College of Commerce, Notre Dame had grown from a small college to a university with five colleges and a professional law school. -
College name changed to John Carrol
In 1923, after splitting into two seperate programs, the college half of Saint Ignatius was named John Carrol University. -
Alma Mater Written
Alma MaterThe alma mater was composed in 1937 by the St. Ignatius High School band director.

Notre Dame allows women
The university first enrolled women undergraduates in 1972 -
Saint Ignatius added to the National Register of Historic Places
Saint Ignatius was added to the National Register of Historic Places on January 21, 1974. -
First State Championships
In 1988, Ignatius won their first two state championships, in wrestling and football. -
First televised football game
In 1989 appeared in first ever nationally televised high school football game on the Sportschannel. The game was vs. Euclid High School and they won 55-26 -
Fine Arts program added
In 1990, a fine arts program was added to the school's curriculum. -
Breen Center is in
The $11.5 million Breen Center for the Performing Arts replaced the Xavier Center in August 2009
