German priests from the Buffalo, New York, Mission of the Society of Jesus came to Cleveland in 1880 at the request of the most Reverened Richard Gilmour, second bishop of Cleveland to take over the parish duties of St. Mary's Church and establish a college.

After much hard work of the priest and brother of St. Ignatius College opened its doors to its first class of 72 young men. The buildibng was a wooden frame structure.

Father Henry Knappmeyer, S.J replaced Father Neustich to become the first full time President of St. Ignatius College.

There was a desire for a Jesuit college prepatory school in eastern Cleveland. In 1907 Loyola High School opened.

From 1886 until 1922 the high school was known as "St. Ignatius High School prepatory to St. Ignatius College." In 1923 the college change its name to "The Cleveland University" but because of dispute over the name by other academic officials in the city, its name was changed to "The John Carrol University"

The alma mater was composed in 1937 by the St. Ignatius High School band director, Jack Hearns Sr.

On January 21, 1974, Saint Ignatius was added to the National Register of Historic Places.
