The government made a new line at 36:30 all new states above the line would be a free slave except missouri who is a slave state. -
compromise of 1850
The compromise did five things. It allowed California to enter the union as a free state, divided the rest of Mexican cession into New Mexico and Utah, ended slave trade in Washington DC, added strict fugitive slave laws, and established a border between Texas and the USA. -

Brown carried his slaves colonist from Kansas act to the east. 16 people died 10 were his followers -
Dred Scott case
Dred Scott, a slave moved with his owner to a free state. Later when his owner died, the slave thought he should be free. The case went all the way to the supreme court who said that he can't sue because he is property. -
election of 1860
Abraham lincoln was elected even though he didn't have the majority of the popular vote. This made people in the south worried that they didn't have a voice in the government anymore. -
South Carolina secedes
South Carolina became the first to secede late February of 1860 because Abraham Lincoln was against slavery. South carolina felt threatened.
