First Came Out
Sprint cars started being raced around 1920/1930. They first came out like a teardrop-shaped body. They were like an indie because of their size. -
Upgraded
In the 1950s sprint cars had some really big upgrades.
The biggest one was the wing, you didn't have to run the sprint cars with wings but they were a lot safer reducing rollovers and providing an extra barrier between the driver and the impact point in an accident. Another big change was the motor, after the four-cylinder most switch to a flathead V8, then after the V8, they changed to small block chevy engines. -
Sprint car wings
A wing on a sprint car acts like an upside-down air raft wing. instead of pulling the sprint car up, it is putting down-force on the car. As the sprint car gets faster the more pressure is put on the car. The wing on a sprint car is adjustable, moving the back of the wing up and down and sometimes moving the front up and down. Wings on sprint cars even give the car a little more speed. The wings help when the track is slick you can lean the wing down more to give the car more grip and opposite. -
Rear wheels stagger
When you look at any kind of sprint car you will think the right rear wheel is fairly larger than the left rear, well it is! This is called stagger. People leave stagger in the tires like this because it is much easier to make left-hand turns. If the rear wheels didn't have any stagger, it would be a lot harder to turn the car into the corner. when you role a sprite bottle on the ground the bottle turns to the smaller end, which is a stagger. -
New sprint cars
Sprint cars have changed so much in the past 50 years. adding wings, bigger wheels, bigger motors. All of these things added horsepower and make the car faster. When sprint cars first came out there was 30 main dirt tracks In the U.S. now there is over 1000 all over the world -
