The Compromise of 1877
This Compromise was an informal agreement between southern Democrats and Republicans to settle the 1876 presidential election. This resulted in Hayes becoming president despite Tilden having won the popular votes. -
Hayes becomes the 19th president of the U.S
Rutherford B. Hayes, a republican, went against Samuel J. Tilden, a democrat, in the 1876 election. As a result of the compromise of 1877, in March of 1877, Hayes won the presidency. -
Creation of the Light Bulb
After many failed attempts, Thomas Edison was able to create the first long lasting fulminated light bulb. This was a huge change to America, because it was used in all the homes and work spaces to light up buildings. -
Chinese Exclusion Act
This was the first big law that restricted immigration in the United States. This act was passed because American believed that Chinese immigrants were stealing their jobs, so they wanted to ban them from doing so, therefore allowing Americans to take those spots. -
Spanish American War
This war was a conflict between the United States and Spain, in which they fought over Cuba's independence. In August 13, 1898, the war came to an end and Spain had to give territories like Puerto Rico, Guam and the Philippines to the U.S. -
World War 1
The assassination of Archduke Ferdinand of Austria-Hungary in June was only the beginning of many reasons causing World War 1 to begin. Austria-Hungary declared war on Serbia, and allied nations quickly began to join. -
Stock Market Crash
In October of 1929, stock prices collapsed, wiping out billions of dollars of wealth. This led to a widespread economic hardship across the United States. -
Roosevelt is Elected President
In the election of 1932, Franklin D. Roosevelt beat Hoover with 89% of the electoral vote. With his new presidency he can help the country get out of the Great Depression. -
Hitler Rises to Power
Adolf Hitler became Chancellor and the Nazi party began to rise. He took over Germany and other countries, and also started the Holocaust. -
The Holocaust
Following Hitler's rise to power, Hitler along with the Nazi regime began the Holocaust, where they captured and murdered around 6 million Jews. They were sent to concentration camps, tortured, and killed because Hitler believed they were the "inferior race". -
NATO is formed
The North Atlantic Treaty Organization, or NATO, was formed as a result of threat to the United States from the Soviet Union. This was set in place to prevent the Soviet Union from expanding, and prevent conflict between Europe and North America. -
Launching of Sputnik
The launch of the Sputnik marked the beginning of the Space Race between the Soviet Union and the United States.This launch also caused fear in Americans that the Soviet Union was capable of launching a missile and starting a nuclear war. -

Leo was adopted
