Ghosts
There was a haunted room in the same hallway that Maxine's mother's room was at. One day she dared to sleep in the haunted room to see if she saw a ghost. "I'll go sleep in the ghost room. Then if anything happens, I wont miss it." (67) -
Killing a Ghost
The next day Maxine told her friends that there was a ghost. So at night, her and her roommates killed the ghost by using oil, alcohol, and fire. " I think my mother said that under the foot of the bed the students found a piece of wood dripping with blood." (75) -
No Name Women
Maxine's mother told Maxine she had a aunt. Nobody ever talked about her because she was married, but she got preganant from another man. The day she gave birth, the villagers raided and destroyed her house. The next day they found her and her baby in the family's well. It is important because her mother told her this so she wouldn't do the same and humiliate the family. "Now that you started to menstruate, what happened to her, can happen to you."(5) -
Mountains.
Maxine followed a bird all the way to the mountains. There she found an old couple. She slept in their house and the next day she decided she was going to stay with them for 15 years so she can train to become a warrior women. "You can go back right now if you like. You can go pull sweet potatoes, or you can stay with us and learn how to fight barbarians and bandits." (22) -
Warrior women
15 years after living with the old couple, Maxine went home fully trained. She went into battle so her family wouldn't have to get in it. "Nlo, Father," I said. "I will take you place." (34) -
Battle
Maxine fought a giant. She cut off his leg and head. This is important because it demonstrates how well trained she was. "I cut off his leg with one sword swipe." (38) -
Pregnant
Maxine got pregnant by her husband. After she had her baby, she was still strong and was in battles. "While the blur is still in my eyes and the little fists shut tight like buds, I'll send my baby away from me." (41) -
Life in America
Maxine's life in america was a disappointment. She got straight A's but her mom didn't care. They would say that you couldn't eat straight A's. "When you raise girls, you're raising girls for strangers." (46) -
Claming her Husband
Moon Orchid went to go talk to her husband but he didn't want to be with her. He had remarried and he had a business. H didn't want nothing to do with Moon Orchid ."She may stay, but i do not want her in my house." (153) -
Brave Orchid's Sister
Brave Orchid brought her sister, Moon Orchid to the United States from China. Her Husband had left her in China for may years. He remarried and never came back. Brave Orchid wanted her sister to go claim her husband. "Your husband is going to have to see you. We'll make him recognize you." (124) -
Tongue
Maxine's mother cut Maxin'e tongue so she could talk better. "if my mom was not lying she should have cut more, scraped away the rest of the frenum skin, because I have a terrible time talking." (165) -
Talk!
There was a girl that Maxine didn't like because she was so clean. Maxine liked tough girls. So one day when Maxine and the girl were alone Maxine tried to get her to talk. She pulled her hair pinched her cheeks, trying to get her to talk but the girl never talked "You can talk in front of one person. Don't make me pull harder and harder until you talk."(180)
