The woman warrioir
Maxine learns about her aunt that hung herself because she was being bullied for the fact that she was pregnant and not by her husband because he had not been home in so long.
I believe this is signaficant because it is a story that they did not want to talk about because it brought shame to their family, and it would probably have an impact in her future life.
"Your aunt gave birth in the pigsty that night. The next morning when i went for the water, I found her plugging up the family well"(5) -
White Tigers
Maxine meets an old couple that feed her and let her stay with them. After a day and night with them they asked her if she would stay and that they would train her to become a warrior but for her to complete her training she has to stay with them for 15 years.
This is important because Maxine is staying with people that she don't really know for 15 years to be trained.
"Do you think you can bear to stay with us for fifteen years? We can train you to become a warrior." (22) -
How to be quite
Part of her training was that she had to learn to be quite that animals would not be afraid to come near her. She would sit out in the woods all day until she learned how to master being silent. After mastering what she had learned she was sent to stay in the white tiger mountain and learn how to survive on her own. " I could kneel all day without my legs cramping and my breathing became even, the squirrels would burry their hoardings at the hem of my shirt..."(23) -
Time to go home
Once she was finished with training and was sent back home. The old couple gave her some beeds for when she would need them. As she gets home she see's her parents and helps them out whe she finds out that her father is going to be sent to war she takes his spot to defend their village.
I think this is very important since she takes her fathers place in a war dressed and acting like a man. "Wherever you go, whatever happens to you, people will know our sacrifice.."(34) -
Face the giant
While Maxine went off to war in her fathers place she came across a giant that she had to face. She cut his head and leg off in which showed she was strong and brave.
I chose to write about this because it showed that she was brave and strong enough to defeat a giant. "I slashed him across the face and then cut off his head" (44) -
Shaman
In this story it talks about her Maxine's mother is a doctor and how she is going to collage for it. It also talks about how the haunted ghost room was down the hallway.Maxine's mother dared to sleep in the haunted room and then later on defeated it. "But ghost can't be just nightmares." (65) -
at the western palace
Moon Orchird comes done to America to try to find her husband because she has not seen him in ten years. She knows he has remarried so by the time she finds him he says that he can't deal with her and if they find out he is married twice they would probably deport him. This shows that they could get deported if they found out.
"Her husband looked at her. And recognized her. "You," he said, What are you doing here?" (152) -
A song for a Barbarian reed pipe
Maxine is going to school and she don't know how to speak english so her and three other little girls and they would stay after school everyday they would play in a room and a little girl was following Maxine so she started abusing her because she didn't like her. Maxine has a temper and she can be cruel at times. -
Finding a husband
Maxines parents were trying to find her a husband because they believed it was time for her to marry they would pick out a husband that seemed right for her. Maxine wasn't at all excited with getting married so she flips on her parents. She doesn't want to get married and that seems interesting because most of the times you would think that they want to get married. -
Life problems
She ends up fightin with her mom because she doesn't want to get married and starts telling her how they never did really appreciate how she was. She also stated that her life had always been very boring because of them.
It's important because she finally admits that her life had always been boring like she said at the beginnign of the book.
