Gavvy Cravath Beats The Giants
Gavvy Cravath, general manager of the Philadelphia Phillies, puts himself in a game against the New York Giants as a pinch-hitter. Cravath hit a three-run homer, single-handedly wining the game 3-0. -
First Radio Baseball Broadcast
On August 5 1921, the first ever radio broadcast of a baseball game was given by the station KDKA. The Pittsburgh Pirates and the Philadelphia Phillies played, and the Pirates won eight runs to five. Harold Arlin announced all nine innings play-by-play. -
Gene Tunney Loses a Match
Gene Tunney was one of the most famous boxers of all time. Of the 68 professional matches he fought, he lost only one, to Henry Greb on May 23rd 1922. Tunney went on to become a heavyweight, went undefeated, and retired as heavyweight champion of the world. -
Robert LeGendre Sets Long Jump Record
In the 1924 Summer Olympics, the USA was in part represented by distance jumper Robert LeGendre. On July seventh in Paris, France, LeGendre broke the world record for distance in a jump at 7.76 meters, or twenty-five and a half feet. He also took home the bronze medal for the Pentathalon. -
Rose Bowl Radio Broadcast Coast to Coast
The 1927 Rose Bowl football game was the thirteenth Rose Bowl and the first one to ever be broadcast coast to coast on radio. Brodcast by NBC on January 1st, thousands tuned in to hear the game. The Alabama Crimson Tide and the Standford Football Team faced eachother and tied seven to seven.
