    Duncan McNaughton, a Canadian high jumper was born in Cornwall Ont, and raised in Vancouver. McNaughton competed in the 1932 Olympic games in Los Angeles. McNaughton was one of the four jumpers that cleared the maximum height of 1.97 meters and they all went into a jump off. Duncan McNaughton went on to win the gold medal. He is the only Canadian that won a gold medal in high jump to this day.
  • Radio Broadcasting

    In 1932 the government granted a monopoly of network broadcasting to the public. The Canadian Radio Broadcasting Commission created national service for the people but was later taken over and expanded in 1936 by the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation or as we know them by CBC. the CBC were the first to separate french and English speaking stations with its own stations and private ones.

    Joe Louis defeats Max Schelling in Yankee Stadium in 2 minutes and 4 seconds in front of 70000 people. This was the largest crowd to that date. Joe Louis was the heavyweight champion for the whole decade following.

    Sep 14, 1939 the popular film ‘The Wizard of OZ’ was created. This movie is about a girl named Dorothy Gale that is taken to the magical land of OZ by a tornado from her farm in Kansas and in this magical land she meets some friends that will help her find the wizard because he is the only one who can return her to her farm in Kansas. This was a huge moment in history because even to this day i heard about this movie.

    The film ‘Rebecca’ wins the 1940 best picture award. This film was about a native woman named Rebecca that marries a rich guy named George and they settle in ‘Manderlay’ the huge mansion that George owns. Rebecca then finds the memory of George's first wife.

    Most sports in the 1940s were disrupted by WWII this included the 1940 and the 1944 Olympic games. These events were canceled because most athletes fought in the war. Some of these athletes include Warren Spahn, Ted Williams, Bob Feller, and Stan Musial.
