    Students with disabilities were isolated into different classrooms from the rest of the students, to avoid influences on "non-disabled children". There was a deep fear that people with disabilities would reproduce and integrate with society if they received an education.

    This argued that segregation was unconstitutional
  • Architectural Barriers Act (ABA) of 1968

    Architectural Barriers Act (ABA) of 1968
    Requires Federal funded building to have accessibilities for people with disabilities
  • Pennsylvania Association for Retarded Children v. Commonwealth of Pennsylvania

    Pennsylvania Association for Retarded Children v. Commonwealth of Pennsylvania
    The state of Pennsylvania was sued by the the Pennsylvania Association for Retarded Children (PARC) for not providing education for students who have intellectual disabilities
  • Rehabilitation Act

    Rehabilitation Act
    made it illegal for public institutions to discriminate against individuals who have disabilites
  • EHA The Education for All Handicapped Children Act

    EHA The Education for All Handicapped Children Act
    Allows for children with disabilities to attend public schools and protects the rights of children with disabilities there. It is now called Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA)
  • First EHA Case heard by Supreme Court

    First EHA Case heard by Supreme Court
    Hendrick Hudson District Board of Education V. Rowley where the parents requested a sign language interpreter for their daughter Amy but the school denied them of one.
  • Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA)

    Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA)
    Helps with defending and protecting people with disabilities from discrimination in workplace, as well as school
  • Higher Education Opportunity Act and the Affordable Care Act

    Higher Education Opportunity Act and the Affordable Care Act
    Helps with aiding students with intellectual disabilities. Gives students opportunities for grants and Federal work-study programs
  • National Institute of Child Health and Human Development

    National Institute of Child Health and Human Development
    A program by President John F. Kennedy that supports research on intellectuals with disabilities and all aspects of maternal, human development, and child health that we still use today. Consisted of a panel of doctors, and outstanding scientists.
