Stamp Act
The Stamp Act taxed printed items such as playing cards, newspapers,magazines,and legal documents.Colonists had to pay the tax with british currency,not colonial paper money.Colonist believed Britain had no right to tax them. -
Boston Massacre
Also known as the "Incident on King Street",a angry crowd of colonist gather around the Massachusetts State House, throwing rocks and snowballs at Redcoats who hold their fire. As the crowd came closer, the British fired and the crowd fled. After the Boston Massacre, 5 were left lifeless. -
Boston Tea Party
During the night, members of the Son of Liberty dressed up as American Indian and marched onto three British ships in Boston Harbor in political protest.The group, led by Samuel Adams and Paul Revere, threw 300 chest of tea overboard into the harbor. After the Boston Tea Party, the colonist who took part refused to pay for the tea they destroyed. -
First Continental Congress
Leaders from all colonies expect Georgia met in Phildelphia for the first Continental Congress. Delegates hoped for peaceful solutions to solve problems with Great Britain.They sent a petition to King George,reminding him of the colonist's basic rights as British citizens and asked for a militia. -
Famous Patrick Henry Speech
In the Virginia Convention at St. Johns Church in Richmond, Virginia,Patrick Henry made a speech to convince the Virginia House of Burgesses to pass a resolution which would deliver Virginia troops to battle in the Revolutionary War.In the speech were the words 'Give me Liberty or Give me Death!' which soon became a patriotic slogan during the war. -
Battle of Lexington and Concord
On this night,the British marched toward Lexington and Concord, hoping to arrest two Sons of Liberty leaders and capture their weapons in secret.Paul Revere heard about the plan and rode to Lexington to warn of the British.As the British came to Lexington, the battle began and someone fired first although no one knows who. Afterwards,the British continued to Concord, winning this battle.There the Minutemen met up with the British again and beat them, forcing them down to Boston. -
Approving Declaration of Independence
The Declaration of Independence announced and explained independence from Britain.Although Benjamin Franklin and John Adams helped write the Declaration of Independence, the main writer was 33-year-old Thomas Jefferson,who would, in the future,become our 3rd president.On this day, Congress approved the Declaration of Independence and it was sent to King George and was published in newspapers worldwide. -
Battle of Saratoga
The Battle of Saratoga was a big turning point during the Revolutionary War.In the first Battle of Saratoga,the British won but result changed and in the second Battle of Saratoga, the Patriots won. It also convinced the French to help the Patriots during the war. -
Surrender at Yorktown
Cornwallis set his headquarters up in Yorktown, where supplies could be brought easily but could be surrounded with ease. Knowing this, the Patriots made a plan to defeat Cornwallis.They surrounded the town but Cornwallis tried to get supplies from the British,only they didn't make it in time and after weeks and weeks, he finally surrendered, ending the war and giving victory to the Partriots. -
Signing of Treaty of Paris
Some Americans, including Ben Franklin,John Adams,and John Jay,went to Paris to sign a treaty with England in which is an agreement between two countries. After signing the Treaty of Paris,the United States was then looked at as a nation,British soldiers left America,and Loyalist were treated equal.
