Plessy v. Ferguson
Upheld racial segregation under the separate, but equal doctrine. -
Brown v. Board of Education
This case overturned the Plessy v. Ferguson case and provided that ALL people regardless of race, or gender has access to a public education. The case desegregated schools and allowed a diverse group of students learn together. This case paved the way for parents of students with disabilities to fight for their rights.

P.A.R.C v. Commonwealth of Pennsylvania
Historically the Brown vs. Board of Education set a precedent for students with disabilities to receive equal educational opportunities. “One distinct case in the 1970’s provided individuals with disabilities this opportunity; Pennsylvania Association for Retarded Children (PARC) v. Commonwealth of Pennsylvania and Mills v. Board of Education” (Flexer, 2013). -
Mills v. Board of Education
This special education was brought to the supreme court because children were denied placement into public education because of their mental, behavioral, physical, or emotional disabilities. This case paved the way for lawsuits across the nation and to the creation of Education of Handicapped Children Act (EHA). -
Rehabilitation Act of 1973
Prohibited the discrimination of any person with disabilities. This law paved the way for equal access to education for students with disabilities.

FERPA Enacted
The Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) is enacted. Children's educational records are protected under this law. -
Education for All Handicapped Children Act

Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA)
The IDEA was enacted into law by George H.W Bush on October 30, 1990 it replaced the EHA.
