  • Council for Exceptional Children Is Created

    Council for Exceptional Children Is Created
    A group of administrators established the CEC in 1922 as the International Council for the Education of Exceptional Children. The name was changed to the Council for Exceptional Children in 1958. The council helped pass the Education For All Handicapped Children Act in 1975
  • Elementary and Secondary Act (ESEA)

    Elementary and Secondary Act (ESEA)
    Elementary and Secondary Education Act was created to give grants to districts serving low-income students, federal grants for textbooks and library books, funding for special education centers, and scholarships for low-income college students. The law provided federal grants to state educational agencies to improve the quality of elementary and secondary education.
  • Mills v. Board of Education of DC

    Mills v. Board of Education of DC
    A lawsuit based on children who were denied public education by the District of Columbia School District due to their disabilities and the cost the school would have to spend to accommodate them. It was argued that students with disabilities are entitled to their education and it cannot be denied on the basis that their accommodations require additional costs. This was one of the first cases that guaranteed disabled students the right to a public education regardless of the cost to the schools.
  • Rehabilitation Act

    Rehabilitation Act
    This act grants to States for vocational rehabilitation services, with special emphasis on services to those with the most severe disabilities. Establishes special responsibilities in education and welfare for coordination of all programs with inclusion for individuals with disabilities. The individuals are protected under section 504, protecting people with disabilities.
  • Individualized Education Program (IEP)

    Individualized Education Program (IEP)
    Individualized Education Program was introduced into the school system. This act allowed students with disabilities to be placed in the least restrictive environment in order to allow students to have the opportunity to interact with their non-disabled peers. This program was so important because it was one of the first times children with disabilities were granted a legal right to education.
  • Education for All Handicapped Children Act

    Education for All Handicapped Children Act
    This act was created to improve educational services in public schools for children with mental, physical, emotional, and learning handicaps. It required that free appropriate public education be available for all handicapped children. Schools are required to evaluate a child's special needs, develop an individualized education program for the child, involve the child's parents, and educate the handicapped child along with non handicapped students.
  • Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA)

    Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA)
    This act requires schools must find and evaluate students thought to have disabilities. It gives rights and protections to kids with disabilities. It covers children from birth through high school graduation or age 21 depending which one comes first. Parents and guardians are also given rights under this act. IDEA
  • Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA)

    Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA)
    This act made it unlawful for people to be discriminated because of their disability. It also required employers to provide reasonable accommodations to employees with disabilities. As well as imposing accessibility requirements on public accommodations.
  • North Florida School of Special Education

    North Florida School of Special Education
    The idea of this school was brainstormed by a group of parents who recognized that there was a need for better educational opportunities. The school focused on creating a learning environment. It embraced, educated, nurtured and equipped special needs students with the life skills to become contributing members of their community.
  • No Child Left Behind Act

    No Child Left Behind Act
    The No Child Left Behind Act was signed by President George W Bush. This act identified the state standard for all schools that no student should be left without a proper education in their learning. This act integrated testing to the mix and informed that those with disabilities will also apply to the development of student learning in the school system. No Child Left Behind Act
