  • Brown Vs. Board of Education

    Brown Vs. Board of Education
    The U.S. Supreme Court ruled that racial segregation in schools is unconstitutional. This impacts Special Education today because it began the foundation of providing equality for students. Students regardless of race, ability, disability, etc. should be provided equal opportunity in education.
  • The Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA)

    The Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA)
    This law was signed in by President Lyndon B. Johnson in which it provided states with federal money to fund public schools to improve opportunities students including special education students. This impacts Special Education today because schools continue to receive funds in order to support the diverse needs of our population and to reach each student where they are by providing opportunity to all.
  • Diana v. State Board of Education

    Diana v. State Board of Education
    This was a court case in California which ruled placing a child in Special Education based off culturally biased tests scores was unconstitutional. This impacts Special Education today because it helps to eliminate misclassifying students in special education programs.
  • Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act

    Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act
    This is a Civil Rights law that prohibits discrimination of individuals with disability in programs that are federally funded. It allows individuals with disabilities to receive equal opportunity when it comes to programs available. This impacts Special Education today because it allows students receiving special services to not be discriminated against.

    The Handicap Children’s protection Act
    This Act provides that federal funding for Special Education services and it also ensures that schools are required to provide IEPs for students. This impacts Special Education today because it allows students to receive education with supplemental services and resources that is tailored to their specific needs.
  • Timothy W. v. Rochester School District

    Timothy W. v. Rochester School District
    This case was brought upon because a student was denied services. It ruled that all school boards were to provide Special Education Services to all individuals with a disability regardless of the severity of the disability. This impacts Special Education today because now there are various programs available to students depending on the severity of their disability and with that they all receive equal opportunity to education and services.

    Individuals with Disabilities Act
    Civil Right law that prohibits discrimination against disabled individuals in public settings. These settings include that of the workplace, education, and public services. It provides accommodations for individuals. This impacts Special Education today because it allows each student the right to fully engage and participate in services provided by the school districts and allows for school districts to provide appropriate accommodations.

    The IDEA Amendments
    These Amendments were signed into law to provide changes to IDEA. The changes allowed for greater review, changes within IEPs, and parent involvement in the decision-making process of their child. This impacts Special Education today because it allows for greater structure of programs, greater differentiation strategies when working students with disabilities, and also for parents involvement.
  • No Child Left Behind Act

    No Child Left Behind Act
    This Federal Law was signed by President George W. Bush on January 8, 2002. This Law updated The Elementary and Secondary Education Act. This Law has the purpose of holding the government and schools accountable for student success and achievements. This is when assessments began as well. This impacts Special Education today because it does allow for accommodations when it comes to assessments under an IEP or 504. Also it helps to implement evidence-based best practices.
  • IDEA Improvement Act

    IDEA Improvement Act
    This act ensures that students with disabilities are provided with free and appropriate Education. States are federally funded in order to make special education services available to children between the ages of 3-21. It emphasizes the importance of equitable education for students with disabilities. This impacts Special Education because it allows for districts to have funds to provide free education to those with disabilities and provide them with equity and equality.
