Special Education History Timeline

  • Established Perkins School For the Blind

    This set a precedent for other specialized schools to follow suit after the first special education school opened in the United States which is the first milestone made for Special Education.
  • Council for Exceptional Children Established

    This important milestone was developed in order to promote rights and needs of children with exceptionalities. It also promoted more research and professional development opportunities.
  • National Association for Gifted Children Established

    This association was created to support individuals who demonstrate intellectual giftedness. This was an important milestone for Special Education as it was one that recognizes the exceptional learners in addition to the more obvious physical or academic needs.
  • Brown v. Board

    This landmark Supreme Court case pertaining to the racial segregation in public schools helped lead to the decision to challenge the discriminatory practices against students with disabilities.
  • Learning Disabilities Association of America Established

    This association was established to create more awareness and providing more resources and learning strategies to support students with specific learning disabilities.
  • Special Olympics Incepted

    This was a significant milestone as it fills an area of need that was missing from ensuring equal and fair treatment of people with disabilities in all areas. By creating this event it allows all to be able to participate in sports and recreational activities.
  • Mills v. Board of Education of the District of Columbia

    In the case, the court introduces the access to Free Appropriate Public Education for students with disabilities. It made it so all students had the right to receive a quality education regardless of their level of disability.
  • The Rehabilitation Act of 1973 was passed

    This policy helped enforce the the previous ruling of allowing access to a quality education for all students. The section 504 states the requirement of federally funded programs to provide reasonable accommodations to students in this category to help make this possible.
  • Least Restrictive Environment introduced

    The LRE principle helped establish the need to place students in a more appropriate setting to ensure access to a quality education is achievable. This would allow students to be placed with other individuals with similar needs.
  • Americans with Disabilities Act Passed

    This was an important milestone for Special needs as it encompassed many different aspects of life as well as benefits to special education. Some aspects such as public transportation and employment fell into this and allowed accommodations to provide better access to public programs and prohibits discrimination against individuals with special needs.
  • Response to Intervention Introduced

    This approach was created to help identify and support students with special needs. By being able to target individual areas of needs it can allow more effective interventions to be made. This system can also aid in early identification of a learning need or help determine if more special education supports are needed.
